July got off to a HOT start for Capt. Alvin and crew. A 1st place overall finish at the annual Bastille Day Kingfish Tournament on the 14th was Capt. Alvin’s 5th time winning the local tournament since 2000, over 50 boats participated this year. Big congratulations to Mathew Laban for catching the largest Kingfish of the tournament at 34.26lbs and Best Male Angler award as well as Tamika Turbe with her 3rd place tournament Kingfish at 30.27lbs earning her Best Female Angler.
The Offshore scene in July had a steady bite of Mahi and Tuna but their numbers really dwindled by the last week of the month. Luckily, and surprisingly enough, as soon as the Mahi bite showed signs of really slowing down, the Wahoo bite turned on big time in August. These toothy speedsters were in close to the island and ranged anywhere from 25-50lbs providing our guests with blistering runs and rod-bending action on offshore charters along the South Drop. Marlin charters were hit or miss, but the ones that hit were ones to remember, especially in August. One that stood out- our guest Ed embarked early in the morning from the Ritz Carlton beach for his Full Day Marlin trip with Capt. Alvin. The first Blue Marlin, estimated at 400lbs, struck with fury and shook the hook on a last ditch tail walk just feet from the boat. The second hit came just moments later and nearly dumped a 50 wide in the short rigger. The fight lasted close to 2 hours and both Ed and Capt. Alvin worked together to release an estimated 600lb Blue Marlin boatside. With over 3 hours of total fight time logged on the day, that’s a trip to remember!
The Inshore bite stayed very consistent, with plenty of Kingfish, Barracuda and Yellowtail Snapper all apart of the day’s action. Slow trolling and pitching live-bait was a must in enticing a consistent bite and luckily a nice push of fresh sprat was readily available along the south of the island during these late-summer months. As we move closer to the beginning of fall, we should also see increased Blackfin Tuna activity, always a tasty option to grill up after a day fishing the reefs and wrecks around St. Thomas.
If you’re headed to St. Thomas or St. John for a late-summer or fall getaway, give us a call and plan a day out on the water fishing with Capt. Alvin!
